(NewsroomPanama)Overdoses of rain in Panama are wreaking havoc in the agricultural sector with crops from coffee to rice being affected.
In the province of Los Santos recently many farmers have been unable to planting their corn crops.
Jorge Castro, director of the Ministry of Agricultural Development in Los Santos, said rains have meant about 400 fewer hectares of corn will be planted this year.
The rains have also impacted the rice crop, as farmers have been unable to get machinery into the fields to harvest the grain. An estimated 3,000 hectares of rice are still waiting to be harvested.
In Chiriqui coffee crops, including the high ebd geisha coffee which is recognized as the best in the world and with some crops selling for over $170 a lb, earlier third year have been impacted by the storms. Rains across Latin America’s coffee growing areas will almost certainly mean a steep rise in coffee prices.
