Panama Seizes 3 Tons Liquid Cocaine

07/09/2011 By Panama Eric

Panama’s navy seized over three tons of liquid cocaine after intercepting a ship off the Atlantic coast. Authorities arrested one Colombian and one Spanish national.

The ship, bearing a U.S. flag, had set off from Cartagena, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, and was bound for Honduras, reported EFE. It was intercepted in the sea close to the Panamanian province of Colon.

The cocaine was stored in 14 tanks, each able to hold 55 gallons, and was the navy’s first seizure of liquid cocaine in 2011.

The seizure comes just days after 1.8 metric tons of the drug were seized by Panamanian authorities. However, as Insight Crime has noted, even seizures like these are minor in comparison to the high volume of drugs that pass through the country each year. Panama seized some 75 tons of cocaine in 2010.
