Security agencies are preparing to provide safety to the 60,000 to 80,000 individuals expected to arrive in Portobelo on or before Oct. 21 for the festival of the Black Christ.
Carlos Chavarría, Mayor of Portobelo, announced on Saturday that they are coordinating with the police, immigration officials, the National Air Service, and other entities to beef up security in the coastal district and minimize the incidence of crime during the religious festival.
Chavarría informed that people heading to the area will be prohibited from carrying knives and firearms (even if they have permission to carry them).
Meanwhile, Bartolomé Agüero, Chief of Police, urged motorists to drive carefully to avoid trampling parishioners who walk the road to Portobelo.
