(LAHT) Panamanian authorities seized more than 3 tons of cocaine in the northern province of Colon, as well as 30 assault rifles in a separate operation in the western province of Veraguas, officials said.
National Aeronaval Service, or Senan, agents found part of the consignment – 31 packages with 25 kilos of cocaine each – hidden on a beach in Colon’s Costa Abajo region, a spokesman for that police force said on Friday.
Another 79 packages of cocaine, also with 25 kilos each, were discovered by Senan in that same area, although no arrests were made in the operation, Vladimir Rodriguez said.
He added that the drugs were located thanks to an anonymous tip.
Senan has seized more than 30 tons of cocaine and other drugs thus far this year, mostly in Costa Abajo and the northern part of Veraguas.
Separately, Senan units confiscated 28 AK-47 assault rifles, an R-15 and a FAL rifle hidden near the mouth of the Guasaro River in the northern part of Veraguas, some 250 kilometers (155 miles) west of the capital.
One unidentified Panamanian suspect was arrested in that operation, Rodriguez said.
